The review
Troy's Take
I had been reading about Yako online for a while, so I finally drove out to Cottage Grove Road to see if the hype was real. It was.
This is my ideal sushi spot: tiny house-like building, kitchen right in front of you, a few tables to the left, zero flash. The lunch special is almost unfair: Tuesday through Saturday, any two rolls are $11.99 and any three rolls are $14.99.
I started with the Dragon Ball, which is spicy crab wrapped in avocado with spicy mayo, eel sauce and crunch. Then I had a spicy salmon roll and shrimp tempura roll. The salmon was the standout for me, fresh and clean without that pre-made taste you sometimes get.
The gyoza was the biggest surprise. I can honestly say it was the best appetizer I have ever had at a sushi restaurant. Crispy, flavorful and gone way too fast.
If you are anywhere near Madison and love sushi, Yako should be on your list. Fresh fish, great service, low-key vibe, and a lunch deal that feels illegal in 2026.
