Bandit Tacos & Coffee

If Alton Brown calls something "quite possibly the best breakfast sandwich ever," you know I had to check it out. Bandit Tacos & Coffee on West Washington has built a reputation around creative food, house-made tortillas and a coffee lineup that makes it more than just another taco shop, but on this visit the tacos were not what had my attention.

The Porter breakfast sandwich comes with Fox Heritage smoked ham, Hook's one-year sharp cheddar, shaved red onion, stone-ground mustard and an over-medium egg on a Stalzy's brioche roll. It is genuinely excellent. The egg was cooked exactly right, runny enough to mix into everything without turning the sandwich into a mess, the ham was incredible, and the brioche was soft and flaky.

The one thing I could not quite get past: the stone-ground mustard makes it feel more like a lunch sandwich than a classic breakfast sandwich. If you are a bacon-egg-and-cheese person like me, that takes a minute to adjust to.

The space is eclectic and sunny, loaded with plants, cool artwork and great natural light. I walked in expecting the sandwich to be pretty good and walked out thinking it was absolutely worth going back for.
