The review

Troy's Take

Nobody sent me here. My wife and I were craving Mediterranean, I searched around, found Taza in Middleton and said screw it. Then I walked out wondering why nobody had ever told me about this place.

The room is unassuming. Tables up front, more seating in back, nothing you are pulling your phone out for. This is a place that cares far more about what comes out of the kitchen, and I kind of love that.

Lunch is the move. The gyro and chicken shawarma combinations were around $13.75 each and came loaded: gyro, hummus, tabbouleh and pita. We added falafel, which turned out to be the smartest decision of the day. Light crunch outside, soft and flavorful inside, not remotely dry. Best falafel I have had in the Madison area.

The tabbouleh might be the best I have ever had, bright and herby and lemony. Hummus was smooth and creamy. The gyro itself was flavorful with a thin pita you stuff yourself. My wife called it the best Mediterranean food she has had.

If you are on the west side or anywhere near Middleton, put Taza on the list. And whatever else you order, get the falafel.

Good to know

  • Taza is rooted in Palestinian heritage, and part of its mission is creating jobs and English-language learning for immigrants in the Madison area.
  • Lunch combinations were around $13.75 when I visited. Great value for the amount of food.
  • Open seven days a week, 11 AM to 9 PM. Carryout and catering available.
  • People also rave about the lamb shank, kefta and lentil soup, so there is a lot more here than gyros and shawarma.
