Quivey's Grove

Quivey's Grove's outdoor fish fry is a Fitchburg Friday must

6261 Nesbitt Rd, Fitchburg, WI

This is supposedly one of the best fish fries in the Madison area. We are at Quivey's Grove out in Fitchburg, where on Fridays from 5 to 8 PM they do their outdoor fish fry. We got the beer battered cod, so let's see how it is.

What I ordered

There are three different types of fish you can get, and you can also get a combo of all of them if you would like. There are a couple things on the kids menu as well. I went with the beer battered cod, and the entire family decided to get a little bit of everything.

My thoughts on the food

The thing I like about beer battered fried food is that it is at this weird intersection of being thick but also still being flaky and crunchy. I love that. It is still easy to eat, and you still get that deep fried, yeah this is going to be good, type of meal. The beer battered cod was awesome.

The house made tartar sauce was awesome too. I typically am not a big fan of tartar sauce, but it made this fish fry taste delicious, and honestly that is what I eat food for. Full transparency, I have not been to a ton of fish fries around Wisconsin, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But this tasted great.

The vibe

Quivey's Grove has their main building, the Stone House, which is more of a nicer restaurant, and then the Stable, which is more of a laid back restaurant with a nice bar. It is actually one of my favorite spots to go, because during the summer they have tons of things happening throughout the week. There is a huge grass area where kids can just run around, and my kids absolutely love playing there. Then there is the massive tent where the fish fry is, so you are in a shaded area, and a lot of times they have live music out there.

The verdict

Overall it is a great spot. I personally think this fish fry tastes really good, and it is so close to me, so maybe there is some bias there. If you have not been to Quivey's for their fish fry, I highly recommend it, and if you have not been to Quivey's Grove at all, the restaurant or the Stable, go there too. Great food, and you do not have to go to downtown Madison for it. That is a dub.
