Poppy Bakery's kouign-amann might be my favorite bakery item ever
2021 E Ivanhoe Pl, Milwaukee, WI
This is Poppy Bakery in Milwaukee off East Ivanhoe. Small little bakery, it smells delicious, and I am telling you, everything in there looks so good. I was so excited to try it.

What I ordered
A bacon and cheese pastry my wife picked (I cannot remember exactly what it is called), a ham and cheese croissant, and a kouign-amann. Never had one of those before, so this was a first.
My thoughts on the food
Started with what my wife was already snacking on. Cheese and bacon crumbles all over it. Oh my god. Wow. Yes. 100% yes. So good, and so flaky.
The ham and cheese croissant looks like perfection. I would maybe do a little thicker ham or one more slice, but croissant wise this might be one of the best croissants I have had in my entire life. Unreal. So flaky, so light. The ham gets thicker toward the middle too.
Then the kouign-amann. I asked the person working what it was, and the person behind me in line said just get it, it is top notch. It is known as the caramelized cousin of the croissant, sweet with a slightly savory side. It is huge. Buttery, sweet, absolutely layered. The three things I love about it: it is buttery, it is layered and lightly flaky, and it is not overly sweet. Just a light coating of sweetness. This might be my favorite bakery item ever.
The verdict
Literally one of the best bakeries I have had in the entire state of Wisconsin so far. I heard if you go a couple hours after they open it is slim pickings, and I can absolutely see why. Poppy Bakery, incredible job. If you have not been, go.
