I've been looking for a Wisconsin spot that can match the breakfast burritos Texas is known for...

Madison isn't exactly famous for breakfast tacos or breakfast burritos, which is probably why Finca Coffee caught my attention so quickly. Coming from Texas, where breakfast tacos and burritos are practically their own food group, I've always felt like Madison was lacking in that area.

Finca, technically in Fitchburg, is a coffee shop that goes well beyond coffee. Their Salvadoran-inspired menu includes pupusas, tacos, burritos, and its signature Salvadoran quesadilla. After trying three of those dishes, I can confidently say this is one of those places where the food deserves just as much attention as the coffee.

The Ambiance

Finca's dining room is bright and cozy, with large windows and a fireplace that gives the space some additional warmth. There's also outdoor patio seating, so the space can work particularly well when the weather cooperates.

This is the kind of space that makes sense for both a quick breakfast or settling in for some work on your laptop. Rumor has it they even have a customer-accessible printer, but I didn't have the chance to confirm.

Side note: the place also smells incredible as soon as you walk in.

My thoughts on the food

Breakfast burrito: probably my favorite of the three things I tried. It comes packed with sausage, bacon, eggs, peppers, and cheese, so you get a little bit of everything in each bite. The best moment of the meal was hitting a huge crunch of perfectly crispy bacon. Insert chef's kiss here.

Salvadoran quesadilla: probably the biggest surprise of the meal, because it isn't what most people around here picture when they hear the word quesadilla. This version is rich, buttery and slightly sweet, with a texture and flavor that reminded me of really good cornbread. I was honestly blown away by it... I immediately wanted another one.

Pork pupusa: a completely different experience. If you haven't had one before, think of it as a thick, stuffed Salvadoran corn-based flatbread. The dough had a substantial, almost corn-tortilla-like flavor and texture, while the pork was cooked really well and had plenty of flavor on its own. I'd rank the burrito and quesadilla higher, but I definitely liked this enough to come back and try some of the other fillings.

Overall impression

Finca Coffee is one of those places that makes the phrase coffee shop feel like it's underselling what you're actually getting. The coffee is clearly important here, but the food has enough personality to make Finca worth visiting even if you aren't a big coffee person.

For me, the breakfast burrito was my favorite because it scratched that Texas-style breakfast itch that I don't think Madison offers a lot for. The Salvadoran quesadilla was also a surprise standout.

The biggest knock from my visit was the wait. I was told my takeout order would take about 15 minutes, but it took closer to 40 to 45 minutes. I went right when they opened, so I don't want to treat my particular experience as definitive, but I would build a little extra time into your visit rather than showing up expecting fast-food speed.

If you're not in a time crunch, Finca feels like a genuinely worthwhile stop for breakfast, lunch or coffee, and especially for anyone who wants to try something that goes beyond the standard Madison cafe menu.

• Pricing is relatively inexpensive: current online ordering lists a 6-inch breakfast burrito at $6.75, tacos at $3.75, and a 16-ounce latte at $4.50.
• Parking: Finca is on the first floor of the Rimrock complex, which has free surface parking.
• Food is available all day, so you don't have to hit a narrow breakfast window to get the burrito or other savory dishes.
• There may be longer wait times, especially during busy stretches. My own takeout order took roughly 40 to 45 minutes despite an initial 15-minute estimate.
• If you're looking for something unexpected but amazing, the Salvadoran quesadilla is a must.
